Everyone is afraid of something, and if your fear is of going to the dentist, you’re not alone. Among the most common phobias across the world, making the trip to your local dental office is something that is dreaded by many, and outright avoided by more.

The truth, however, is that it’s incredibly important to get regular care for your teeth. This is probably something you know, of course, but it can feel impossible to muster up the will to pick up the phone and schedule an appointment.

At Shores Family Dentistry, we want you to know that we’re sympathetic to your fears and that our number one goal is to put you at ease during your visit. In today’s post, we’ll break down this common phobia a bit more, and we’ll share a little about what makes our team qualified to care for you even if you’re not looking forward to your visit. A Look at the Facts

An article from WebMD mentions that between 5% and 8% of people in America avoid seeing a dentist because of the fear associated with their visit. They go on to note that around 1 in 5 patients experience so much anxiety that they will only make the trip when it’s absolutely necessary.

Unfortunately, the research also shows that the end result is more than just a toothache or the need for a root canal. “Gum disease is a serious infection that can affect other parts of the body [and] studies now link it to illnesses including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.” In other words, even though it’s scary, regular visits to a nearby clinic are in your best interest in the long term.
